workshops

As part of our year-round program, we offer all our performers the opportunity to book onto free, creative workshops with local industry experts. It is part of the Powderham Live! community plan to fund these opportunities for our teenage musicians. If you are not part of the Powderham Live!, but are interested in taking part in any of the workshops you are more than welcome to use the information below to contact the workshop leaders and organise your own sessions at a cost.

1:1 Grounding workshop with aj and robin

All performers will receive a 1:1 session with AJ accompanied by Robin Brown on occasion. AJ specialises in performance grounding and connection - with yourself, your resonance, your music and your audience. Robin is a specialist in empowering the musician to make best use of their instrument/s, sound and stage presence. Having worked with hundreds of musicians of all styles and levels, Robin is a legend at empowering artists to fulfil their potential! They will be asking if there anything in particular you are wanting to focus your session on for example working with a mic, choosing song/s, running through your set for feedback on taking your performance up to the next level, instrument coaching that maybe needed. Or perhaps you want to build/strengthen your: vocal resonance, stage presence, band, communication/cohesion etc. If you do not have any particular areas of focus, no worries, they will support you with providing a safe rehearsal space with their undivided attention.

Where: Online via Zoom

When: Depending on availability. Usually Tuesdays & Wednesdays.

Cost: Free for Powderham Live! performers. Contact us for pricing outside of programme.

Lyric writing with Sadie holler

This workshop will help you think more openly about lyric writing and will help you use your own feelings and experiences to write lyrics that will resonate with listeners and add a new depth to your music. Working either one-to-one or in a small group, you will learn how to develop your song ideas, creating an interesting journey from start to finish. We will be looking at lots of ways to inspire your creativity and overcome the dreaded writer's block.

“Setting the foundations of her musical journey by busking on the streets of Exeter, Devon at age 14, Sadie’s hard work and dedication have paid off and she has established herself as a firm favourite on the South-West music scene. Moving to Brighton in 2019 to study, Sadie has had a huge success by winning the first 'She Shore' song-writing competition at the award-winning venue Ropetackle in West Sussex. Many of Sadie's releases have been featured on compilations such as Mahogany and AlexRainBird, with the most recent compilation attracting over a quarter of a million views. She has also been played numerous times on BBC Radio 6 by Tom Robinson after being chosen as a ‘fresh fave’ on ‘Fresh on the Net’. Her mesmerising voice has not gone unnoticed within the industry, with Universal Studios jumping at the chance to use her vocals for American fantasy television series ‘Emerald City’ and Heart FM commissioning her to write a jingle for primetime commercials.”

Sound and musicianship workshop with robin brown

In Robin’s workshops you will be learning about everything from musicianship, song writing, rehearsal, practice, playing and listening to covering songs, improvising and structured playing, studio tips, how to get the best out of the equipment you own and create a professional sound when performing to an audience, understanding the potential of the tools and equipment you use. These workshops will help you to understand the commitment required to be part of a band and what other things you will need to do if you want to take it further.

In a band it is important to share roles and manage your time, organising yourselves so that each band member knows who has what responsibilities.  The more you understand what is required, talk about plans, share responsibilities and find ways for you to all express yourselves, the better your band will be.

If you are considering music to be a potential career choice, then you need to be professional about your approach and attitude towards it.  Whatever your reasons to play music ‘IT MUST BE FUN’ and keep reminding yourself why you started. Robin’s workshops will be hands on, playing music together in your band in a rehearsal space as well as taking the time to talk, discuss new habits as well as breaking bad habits, planning and developing what you do through the rehearsals.
